A Short Description:
High-Alert Medications are medications are often associated with serious adverse effects or have a narrow therapeutic index, meaning that small variations in dosage or administration can result in severe consequences. Examples of high-alert medications include chemotherapy drugs, insulin, opioids, and anticoagulants. Due to the potential for harm, healthcare providers must take extra precautions when prescribing, dispensing, and administering these medications to ensure patient safety. This may include doublechecking orders, using specialized labels or packaging, and implementing additional safety protocols. Although mistakes may or may not be more common with these drugs, the consequences of an error are clearly more devastating to patients.” as well as medications that carry a higher risk for abuse or other adverse outcomes. Mistakes made while administering these medications have the potential to have serious consequences for patients as well as the healthcare system, and utilizing the correct procedure could help reduce any negative impacts. The current presentation is centered around the topic of how pharmacists in Saudi Arabia can effectively manage high-risk medications.
